Lately, I've been thinking about website layouts. I will never like layouts that have a set width. I don't care how artistic it is. In the end, it's about the content. If I have to scroll down the page to read while having half my horizontal space empty, I won't like it.

There have been guidelines and tips about how your content should appear in the browser window without the user having to scroll. So how does that work when you reduce the available space? This is even more true now with wide screen monitors.

So take a look at the item page for this posting. If your browser window is wide, you'll see these words on the left and information, including links to the previous and next items, on the right. If you make the window narrower, the information moves below this text. This may seem ugly at first, but think about it. It means that people with large screens have less wasted space and don't have to scroll up and down as much. And, if someone has a small window, the chance of them having to scroll left and right is reduced.

The internet is not paper. You do not have set dimensions that everything must fit within. If your information is dynamic, then why isn't your layout?

I'm moving the website to a new server so pictures will be down for a day or so.

Links to some sites I've been liking.

Goodbyes are being said and packing is almost finished. Soon we load the truck and begin the drive. So much to miss and so much to look forward to. I think, after all the stressful things I've had to get done in the last week, it's finally sinking in how much I will miss everyone.

After a long weekend traveling to Utah for a job interview, the old pictures and news have all been moved over from my server in the basement, and the new version of Kwalbum is almost finished enough to be useful.

I said I'd post some pictures of me in the man dress Jeff got me, and I've finally gotten around to uploading them now.

I've redone Forgothow.com recently. Give it a look if you're bored.

July 17, 2009 13:27

I'm adding a few select pictures to this site and the rest will be in my personal album if anyone wants to look.

The picture of me in the Afghan clothes ended up being 640x480 so I'll be having it retaken. My camera's resolution was accidentally reset at some point in the past week. I don't know why they even have such a low resolution still.

In other news, the new version of Kwalbum is coming along well. I'm creating tests right now and soon I'll be moving on to the actual code writing.

I got a package in the mail from Jeff yesterday. He sent me a man dress from Afghanistan. I'll have a picture up soon.

Renee is finished with student teaching!

June 1, 2009 14:43

Jeff and I both added some new pictures today. Renee has just under 2 weeks of student teaching left. And I'm starting my hunt for jobs out west.

Tummycaching.com is also online now and in need of some neat restaurants if anyone wants to add some.

May 20, 2009 09:22

Renee had her graduation ceremony on Saturday. That's about it for big news.

The Lake Flies around here showed up on the radar. Check it out.

I've made some changes to the server that allow larger file uploads for the photo album. Let me know if you have any trouble with bigger pictures or if I should make it larger.

May 1, 2009 13:27

I've made a few more changes to the photo album, besides the colors which will be changing again soon.

First, when you view a location or tags, you'll start on the last page with the most recently dated pictures. From there you can go "back in time" to previous pages.

Second, there is no longer a set number of thumbnails on each row. They'll adjust to fit as many as possible in the width of your browser window. This way you only have to scroll up and down if you're resolution is small, or you don't have to scroll at all if you have a wide enough screen.

Third, the calendar is gone from the main page and has been replaced by lists of most popular and most recently updated locations and tags. This should help with getting to what you want to see more quickly.

Fourth, Locations now has a map of geotagged jpegs and locations. Eventually, I'll have an easy way to tag locations and all types of items. For now, check out Geotag to put coordinates on your pictures. Any .jpg pictures you upload that have been tagged will automatically be added to the map.

That's all for now. I'm off to go backpacking for the weekend.

I just found out what happened to my favorite ride at Great America. There was an accident.

April 21, 2009 13:39

It's snowing outside here in Wisconsin. There was about an inch of snow in the grass last I checked.

I've been working on scanning older pictures lately. They're online, but most are for set to private. That means you'll need to sign up and be logged in to see them. If you aren't a member yet, you can go here to register. Then I'll give your account permission and when you log in you'll be able to see everything.
